Sparkle breaks silence after niece’s explosive allegations
*R&B singer Sparkle, whose real name is Stephanie Edwards, is responding to serious allegations made by her niece, Reshona Landfair. In Landfair’s newly released memoir and TV interview, she accuses Sparkle of encouraging closeness with R. Kelly when she was just 13.
Sparkle issued a statement denying the claims, saying they are “untrue and deeply painful.” She said she had always acted to protect her niece and cooperated with authorities when it mattered most.
Landfair’s memoir details early grooming and troubling family dynamics
In her memoir, Who’s Watching Shorty?, Landfair describes being introduced to Kelly in the 1990s by Sparkle. She claims Sparkle encouraged behaviors like sitting on his lap, rubbing his head, and asking him to be her godfather.
At the time, the family believed Kelly could mentor Landfair’s music group, 4 the Cause. But Landfair now sees those interactions as part of the grooming that led to years of abuse.

Sparkle denies enabling, highlights early efforts to report
In her response, Sparkle says she alerted DCFS when she learned her niece was spending unchaperoned time with Kelly. She emphasized her testimony during the 2008 trial and her appearance in Surviving R. Kelly as proof of her intentions.
“When the tape surfaced, and the state brought charges against him in 2008, I cooperated fully and testified under oath, despite immense pressure not to do so,” she said. “Protecting my niece from abuse and telling the truth mattered more to me than money and my career.”
Public reacts with mixed views on family accountability
Online responses to Sparkle’s statement have been sharply divided. Some fans defend her, calling her the first to publicly speak out against Kelly. Others criticize the alleged early instructions given to Landfair and question her role in enabling access.
While Sparkle’s supporters see her as a whistleblower, others argue that any encouragement to bond with Kelly—even if well-intentioned—was dangerous.
Ongoing fallout from R. Kelly’s convictions and docuseries
The family rift adds another layer to the fallout from R. Kelly’s crimes. He’s currently serving a combined 30-year sentence for federal sex trafficking and child exploitation convictions.
“Surviving R. Kelly” helped bring many voices forward, including Sparkle’s. But Landfair’s memoir centers on her own healing and reclaims her full identity for the first time.

No direct clash yet, but tension between aunt and niece looms
So far, there’s been no back-and-forth between the two women beyond statements. Landfair has not publicly responded to Sparkle’s rebuttal.
But with the memoir now public and interviews making waves, the tension between survivor truth and family defense is hard to miss.
