*A Royal Caribbean passenger, identified as 35-year-old Michael Virgil, tragically died aboard the cruise ship Navigator of the Seas after a violent outburst that led to multiple altercations with crew members and fellow travelers.
The incident – which occurred shortly after the ship departed from San Pedro (CA) to Ensenada, Mexico on Friday (12-13-24) – has raised serious concerns regarding handling unruly passengers and the protocols followed by security teams.
According to reports, Virgil was reportedly intoxicated and threatened to kill several passengers while assaulting two crew members during his rage. Witnesses described terrifying scenes as Virgil chased fellow guests down a hall, brandishing violent threats. Fellow traveler Christifer Mikhail recounted the fear he felt during the incident, stating that Virgil violently kicked a crew member in the face and punched another, leading to chaotic scenes on the ship.
“The gentleman that was drunk said that he was going to kill us,” fellow traveler Mikhail told LA‘s Fox11 TV. “He started chasing us down the hallway.”

The situation escalated when Virgil attempted to kick down the door of a closet where a crew member had sought refuge, showcasing the extent of the disturbance. Video footage from the incident captured the alarming behavior, including Virgil’s use of profanity and a racial tirade against those present.
“I was kind of scared,” Mikhail said. “I’m stuck in this hallway. He could have flicked me and thrown me like 30 feet because the guy he punched kinda flew a couple of feet back.”
Royal Caribbean’s security team eventually managed to detain Virgil using zip ties and either bear or pepper spray after his aggressive actions had exhausted him. However, according to his family, this violent episode took a tragic turn when they claimed security injected him with a sedative shortly after his detention. Virgil reportedly died within an hour of the altercation, prompting an investigation by the FBI into the circumstances surrounding both the incident and his death.
Virgil was aboard the cruise with his fiancé and their 7-year-old son, who is autistic. His family expressed their devastation at the loss, stating that his violent behavior was not characteristic of the man they knew.
“He didn’t deserve to die over it,” a relative lamented, highlighting the shock and sorrow felt by those close to him.

In response to the incident, Royal Caribbean issued a statement expressing sadness over the passenger’s passing, affirming their commitment to cooperating with authorities in the ongoing investigation. As the situation unfolds, it raises questions about passenger safety, the responsibility of cruise lines in managing intoxicated guests, and the protocols in place for handling such crises on board.
