*Earth, Wind & Fire percussionist and vocalist Ralph Johnson is revisiting the legacy of the iconic band in a new memoir set for release this spring. Titled “Rhythm & Fire: A Life in Harmony with Earth, Wind & Fire,” the book offers a personal account of the group’s evolution and Johnson’s own path through decades of music history.
The memoir will be published by independent publisher Diversion Books, with a release date of May 26. PEOPLE exclusively revealed the cover, marking the first look at a project that traces both creative triumphs and behind-the-scenes struggles. The memoir also addresses challenges the group faced, including Maurice White’s temporary departure and the personal growth required of each member.
According to the official synopsis, the band “faced their share of Fire,” but ultimately emerged stronger. Another passage notes that “Ralph Johnson’s genuine and inspiring stories delve into the deeper meanings of fame, success, faith, and community.”

“Bringing Rhythm & Fire to the fans who have supported me for so long is really meaningful to me,” Johnson said. “I can’t wait to share my journey growing up in L.A., and the pursuit of a dream that would one day place me at the Kennedy Center with Earth, Wind & Fire.”
“Rhythm & Fire” features exclusive photographs and a foreword by Questlove of The Roots. The musician, who announced in 2024 that he would direct a project centered on Earth, Wind & Fire, is also set to bring the band’s story to a wider audience through an upcoming documentary.
“Having been baptized in the Afrocentric joy river of this powerhouse unit, I’ve learned about them, I’ve learned about us & more importantly, I’ve learned and rediscovered myself in the process,” Questlove previously said. “I’m so excited to be part of the process of preserving their positive but VERY vulnerable and real story of Soul, Self & Struggle.”
The memoir is currently available for preorder and Questlove’s documentary is slated to premiere on HBO in 2026, Deadline reports.
“I’m honored to tell the story of Earth, Wind & Fire and the deep meaning behind their message and music,” Questlove said. “To grow up listening to the music is one thing but to be handed the keys to the kingdom of preserving history is another. I can’t imagine a better platform on which to share this documentary with U.S. audiences than HBO.”
