*Priscilla Williams Till, a cousin of civil rights icon Emmett Till, has declared her candidacy for the U.S. Senate in Mississippi’s 2026 election.
Driven by a commitment to social justice, she aims to address longstanding inequalities and amplify the voices of marginalized individuals in Washington. “I am running for United States Senator to help shape and enact laws that promote social justice and civil rights protections at a national level in Mississippi that will address historical and ongoing inequalities, while representing marginalized communities that work towards an equitable society,” Till stated in her announcement.
Till’s campaign is deeply tied to her family’s legacy, particularly the 1955 lynching of her cousin Emmett Till, a 14-year-old whose brutal murder sparked outrage and fueled the civil rights movement. As the founder of the Emmett Till Justice for Families Foundation, she has long advocated for accountability in hate crimes and racial justice.
Till said she aims “to ensure that the perspectives and needs of our communities are represented with the federal government contributing to a more inclusive political dialogue.”
As WAPT reports, her platform includes advocating for stronger oversight committees to prosecute hate crimes and expanding equitable protections for all communities. She is challenging incumbent Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.) for the seat. The election is scheduled for Nov. 3, 2026, with party primaries set for March 10, 2026.
Emmett Till’s murder in 1955, after being accused of offending a white woman, exposed the violent persecution faced by African Americans and made him a posthumous symbol of the civil rights movement. Priscilla Till’s advocacy and candidacy build on this legacy, aiming to create systemic change.
