*Mercedes-Benz has decided to abandon its legal effort to repossess a luxury vehicle from Shilo Sanders, son of Colorado football coach Deion Sanders, as reported by Brent Schrotenboer of USA TODAY.
The automaker’s financial division informed a bankruptcy court on Monday that it was dropping the case, though it did not explain the reversal, AthlonSports reports. The dispute centered around a $135,000 car that Sanders had defaulted on. The company sought court permission to bypass a bankruptcy-related freeze on collections, aiming to reclaim the vehicle. However, Deion publicly defended his son, saying Shilo had “fulfilled his financial obligations” and blamed a “disruption in the payments process.” Mercedes now seems to agree, as their attempt to repossess the car has been withdrawn.
The conflict started when Shilo filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in 2023 to manage over $11 million in debt, including a $11.8 million judgment from a 2015 assault case involving security guard John Darjean. According to Schrotenboer, this filing imposed an “automatic stay or hold on debt collection against him by his creditors. Mercedes-Benz asked the court for relief from this stay on April 1 so it could get the car back.” According to Sanders’ legal team, the bankruptcy is an effort to secure “a fresh start in life, free from the oppressive burden of his debts.”
Court documents revealed Shilo made payments into 2024 but stopped between December and January, prompting the initial repossession push. Bankruptcy filings typically pause creditor actions, but Mercedes had requested an exception on April 1 to recover the car.
Shilo Sanders, a University of Colorado defensive back, is currently preparing for the 2025 NFL Draft.
