*It was a cold and rainy Thursday evening. The streets and sidewalks surrounding Culver City Theater – one of Southern California’s oldest destinations for movie watchers – were damp from three consecutive days of heavy rainfall.
Despite these conditions, dozens of people gathered to support this year’s Pan African Film Festival, and the emergence of a new cinematic offering, “Birth of The Black Underworld” from Director Matty Rich.
The storyline – set in the 1930s – takes viewers on a fascinating journey into the evolving mindsets of a pack of young would-be gangsters led by Satterfield Jackson (Matty Rich), an orphan taken in by respected Italian mobster Marco Ricci (Frank Stallone).
Marco and Satterfield develop a father/son bond and like any father would do, Ricci grooms Satterfield for the family business.

It’s a unique departure from your typical mafia-driven movie in which African American performers are often reduced to much smaller roles, or not included at all.
“The film is about love and loyalty. It’s truly a love story,” explained Rich during a red-carpet conversation with EURweb correspondent, Cory Haywood.
Rich’s fingerprints are all over this movie. Not only is he his lead character, but he also wrote, produced, and directed the project.
With several years under his belt as an acclaimed independent filmmaker, Rich doesn’t appear to be losing momentum.
“I’m excited for everyone to see [the movie]. It showcases the best I have to offer and an incredible cast of top-notch performers.”
