Mary J. Blige Hit with $5 Million Lawsuit by Misa Hylton and Vado
*Singer Mary J. Blige is now at the center of a $5 million lawsuit filed by her longtime friend and former stylist, Misa Hylton. The suit, filed on April 28, 2025, in New York State Supreme Court, also includes rapper Vado as a co-plaintiff. They claim Blige sabotaged Vado’s career to force him to break ties with Hylton’s agency, M.I.S.A. Management.
According to the lawsuit, Blige allegedly withheld Vado’s completed album and blocked his touring opportunities. The aim, they say, was to pressure Vado into abandoning his July 2023 management agreement with M.I.S.A., which promised the agency 20% of his earnings, AllHipHop is reporting.
Vado’s Album Allegedly Shelved Amid Business Dispute
In October 2023, Vado signed a recording deal with Blige’s company, Beautiful Life Productions. By July 2024, he had completed his album, but it was never released. Private messages allegedly show Blige stating she would block Vado’s touring and album release as long as he remained tied to M.I.S.A. Management.
The lawsuit also accuses Blige’s security chief, who is described as her boyfriend, of pressuring Vado to sign a new management deal. Vado was reportedly warned that he would lose career opportunities if he stayed loyal to Hylton’s agency.

Mary J. Blige and Misa Hylton: From Friendship to Fallout
Hylton and Blige’s relationship goes back to the early 1990s. Hylton helped create Blige’s iconic “hip-hop glam” look, styling her for videos like “You Remind Me” and “Not Gon’ Cry.” Their friendship was so close that Blige is godmother to Hylton’s son, Justin Combs, whose father is Sean “Diddy” Combs.
However, their bond seems to have fractured over time. Some fans on X speculate that Diddy’s influence may have contributed to the falling out between the two women, though no direct evidence has been presented.
Lawsuit Highlights More Claims Against Mary J. Blige
Beyond the dispute involving Vado, Hylton also accuses Blige of not paying for past styling services. Although the main focus of the lawsuit remains on the alleged sabotage of Vado’s career, the unpaid styling claims add another layer to the dispute.
Hylton and Vado are seeking damages for breach of contract, emotional distress, and interference with business relationships. They also requested a court injunction to prevent Blige from interfering with any future M.I.S.A. Management deals.
Public Reactions and Industry Implications
Neither Blige nor Vado has commented publicly on the lawsuit. Blige is currently busy touring on her “For My Fans Tour” alongside NE-YO and Mario. Meanwhile, fans and industry insiders continue to discuss the lawsuit across social media.
While some fans express shock over the crumbling of a decades-long friendship, others point to Vado’s limited mainstream success and question whether the lawsuit will hold weight. Regardless of the outcome, the case sheds light on how fragile long-term creative partnerships can be in the entertainment industry.
