*Luke Macfarlane’s Charlie returns in season two of “Platonic” on Apple TV+, and this time, he’s bringing more than just marital tension to the table. After spending season one wrestling with Sylvia and Will’s erratic friendship, Charlie is surprisingly settled… at first.
“Well, the truth is I think he’s actually way more at peace with it,” Macfarlane said. “I think he’s kind of figured out that part of loving somebody is letting them… be themselves.” Though he starts off grounded, Charlie’s calm doesn’t last long. “He doesn’t stay there. And I will say Charlie goes through quite a journey this season.”
That journey includes career crossroads, co-parenting challenges, and a surprising Jeopardy appearance that sets off an emotional spiral. “Charlie just straight up has a midlife crisis,” Macfarlane shared.
“I think what was fun about this season is the thing that sort of sets off that midlife crisis… was him showing up on the show Jeopardy. So that was a really fun thing to do,” he added.

Despite the stress of Sylvia and Will’s unpredictable dynamic, Charlie begins to engage with it more openly. “There’s an important part of this season where Will gives Charlie advice and Charlie takes it,” he said, noting that Charlie’s view of Will evolves over time. “Maybe they have something to teach you.”
Macfarlane credits co-stars Rose Byrne and Seth Rogen with creating a fun, trusting environment on set. “They always give me a lot of opportunity to sort of, you know, improvise with them… I’m very grateful to both of them.”
Ultimately, Charlie’s story may resonate with viewers facing similar transitions. “You can lose your footing for a bit, but it doesn’t mean you have to blow everything up,” Macfarlane said. “It’s okay to explore something different. You don’t have to burn your whole life down.”
