*The NBA world woke up Sunday morning to an absolute blockbuster of a trade—one that sent Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers and Anthony Davis to the Dallas Mavericks.
And while trades of this magnitude typically involve months of speculation, rumors, and smoke signals, this one seemingly dropped out of nowhere. But as the dust settles, one question looms large: Why would the Mavericks trade a 25-year-old generational talent?
Dallas Had “Major Concerns” About Luka’s Lifestyle
According to ESPN’s Tim MacMahon, Dallas had serious doubts about Doncic’s conditioning and lifestyle choices, enough to make them “terrified” of handing him a five-year, $345 million super-max contract this summer. Instead of risking that kind of financial commitment, the Mavs preemptively hit the eject button and shipped their franchise star to LA, the NY Post is reporting.
Mavericks GM Nico Harrison defended the move, saying: “We really feel like we got ahead of what was going to be a tumultuous summer. We know teams have been loading up to try to sign him once that becomes available.”
Translation? The Mavs feared Luka was already plotting his escape, so they cut their losses early.
Anthony Davis Is “Good” With Dallas Move, Avoids Center Duties
Meanwhile, Anthony Davis doesn’t seem too broken up about being traded. ESPN reports that he’s “good with going to Dallas”, where he’ll reunite with Mavericks GM Nico Harrison, a longtime friend from Harrison’s Nike days.
More importantly, the move lets AD finally escape playing center, a role he’s never enjoyed. The Mavericks’ deeper frontcourt will likely allow Davis to slide back into his preferred power forward position, making this trade a win in his eyes.
Luka’s $116 Million Loss—And a Brutal Tax Reality
For Doncic, however, the financial side of this trade is far from ideal.
Had he stayed in Dallas, Luka was in line for a $345 million super-max extension this offseason. But since he was traded, the most the Lakers can now offer is $229 million—a whopping $116 million less than what he could’ve gotten from the Mavs.
And let’s not forget state taxes.
In Texas, Luka was paying zero state income tax. But now? He’s moving to California, where he’ll be hit with a 14.4% tax rate on income exceeding $1 million per year.
For context, on a $50 million salary, that’s about $7.2 million per year straight to the state. Ouch.

LeBron Had No Idea This Was Happening—And He’s Not Happy
One person who was completely blindsided by the trade? LeBron James.
According to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, LeBron was “taken off guard” by the Lakers’ decision to swap his longtime teammate Anthony Davis for Luka Doncic.
James found out about the deal while at dinner with family and friends in New York. And—get this—he didn’t even hear it from the Lakers first. Instead, he learned about it from Shams Charania’s tweet.
LeBron’s initial reaction? Confusion.
“James was surprised by the news, is processing it, and had no idea it was in the works,” McMenamin reported.
Shortly after the trade was finalized, Lakers GM Rob Pelinka set up a joint call with AD and head coach JJ Redick, then notified Rich Paul (who represents both Davis and LeBron), and only then did he finally call LeBron.
And when rumors started swirling that LeBron had “grown frustrated” with Davis, he quickly shut that down with a blunt response on X: “You a fkn lie!!! ??”

Mark Cuban Had Nothing to Do With This Trade
Remember when Mark Cuban was the guy making all the Mavericks’ big moves? Yeah, not anymore.
Despite once claiming he’d rather divorce his wife than lose Luka, Cuban revealed he had zero involvement in this deal.
“I was not involved,” he told WFAA in Dallas.
Ever since selling a majority stake in the Mavericks to the Adelson family in late 2023, Cuban has taken a step back from basketball operations.
Instead, the entire decision to trade Doncic fell on GM Nico Harrison, who made the bold call to hit reset on the franchise.

So, Did the Mavericks Just Make a Huge Mistake?
On paper, trading a 25-year-old superstar in his prime seems like an unforgivable blunder.
But the Mavericks clearly weren’t willing to risk tying up $345 million in a player they weren’t fully confident in. And let’s not forget—Doncic was likely to opt out in 2026, meaning the Mavs feared losing him for nothing.
Meanwhile, the Lakers are gambling that Luka + LeBron = Instant Championship Contenders. The problem?
– LeBron turns 40 next season.
– Luka has never played with a co-star like LeBron before.
– The Lakers now lack interior defense, which AD provided.
Ultimately, this trade will be judged years from now. If Luka leads the Lakers to a title, it’s a massive win for L.A. But if he struggles to mesh with LeBron, Dallas might not look so crazy after all. One thing’s for sure—this trade just shook up the NBA landscape in ways no one saw coming.
