*Speculation surrounding Hot 97’s morning lineup intensified after the sudden cancellation of “Ebro in the Morning,” but Funk Flex has made it clear he is not stepping into the role permanently.
The discussion began on Friday, Dec. 12, when Ebro Darden publicly confirmed the end of his long-running program. Sharing the update on X, he wrote, “It’s done. More to come. #EbroInTheMorning.” The show, which also featured Peter Rosenberg and Laura Stylez, had been a fixture on the New York hip-hop station for more than ten years.
Soon after the announcement, Radio Ink reported that MediaCo, the parent company of Hot 97, confirmed Funk Flex would be on air during the day “until further notice,” starting Dec. 15. That report fueled online assumptions that Flex was moving into the vacated morning slot. The station did not initially offer further clarification.

On Sunday, Dec. 14, Flex addressed the rumors directly in the comments section of a Hot 97 social media post. He wrote, “So we are clear! I’m only covering tomorrow only! (One day).” Flex also shared a personal message to Darden, adding, “Ebro [you were] my boss for years… your passion for the music and dedication to the radio game is unmatched! I love you and I’m going to miss [you]! We been to war together when no one would stand with us!”
Meanwhile, Flex sparked a separate wave of controversy after comments made on air led to confusion involving Kimora Lee Simmons. During a discussion about her return to reality television with “Kimora: Back in the Fab Lane,” Flex interjected, yelling, “She’s a bird, continue the story!” before adding, “And DaBaby was beating that!”
After backlash from both Kimora and rapper DaBaby, Flex clarified that he was not alleging she had slept with the hip-hop star. He stated instead that he was referring to Birdman, who is also known as Baby, The Jasmine Brand reports.
