*French tacos, a culinary concept far removed from Mexico’s beloved taco tradition, have recently entered the Los Angeles food scene, offering diners a new and unconventional fast-food option.
As Secret Los Angeles reports, unlike the tacos that Angelenos are used to—light, simple, and focused on fresh salsas—French tacos lean heavily toward indulgence, merging multiple food cultures into a single, portable meal.
The dish traces its roots to Lyon, France, where it first appeared in the early 2000s. Created largely by North African immigrants, French tacos grew out of a mix of culinary influences: French fast-food culture, Mexican tortillas, and the bold flavors of Middle Eastern street fare. The result was something entirely its own, neither burrito, nor kebab, nor panini, but a hybrid that borrows elements from each. Over the past two decades, it has become a late-night staple for European youth, celebrated for both its hearty portions and endless customization.
A French taco begins with a large flour tortilla. Instead of the usual beans, rice, or salsa, it is filled with ingredients like shawarma-style meat, crispy French fries, cheese sauce, and fresh toppings. Once packed, it is folded into a square and pressed on a grill, creating a compact, handheld meal that is equal parts crispy and cheesy.
The name “French tacos” refers to both singular and plural servings, highlighting its departure from the Mexican version.

In Los Angeles, only one restaurant currently offers this European street-food favorite: Pizz’Aliff, located on La Cienega Boulevard in Beverly Hills. Already well known in France for its pizzas and tacos, the chain operates more than a dozen locations abroad. Its Beverly Hills branch presents six varieties of French tacos, all made with halal ingredients.
Whether Los Angeles will embrace this reimagined version remains to be seen. Yet, with its bold mix of fries, savory meats, and melty cheese packed inside a grilled tortilla, the French taco provides something distinctly different for late-night diners seeking a fresh twist on comfort food.
