*The much-anticipated docuseries on former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick, directed by Spike Lee for ESPN Films, has been shelved, both the filmmaker and the network confirmed.
According to Reuters, the project, which aimed to chronicle Kaepernick’s journey as an athlete and activist, was halted due to creative disagreements. “ESPN, Colin Kaepernick and Spike Lee have collectively decided to no longer proceed with this project as a result of certain creative differences,” ESPN stated, expressing gratitude for the collaborative effort despite the outcome.
Speaking at a cancer research fundraiser in Beverly Hills, Lee confirmed the series’ cancellation. “It’s not coming out. That’s all I can say,” he told Reuters, citing a nondisclosure agreement that prevented further details.
“I can’t. I signed a nondisclosure. I can’t talk about it.” The decision follows reported tensions between Lee and Kaepernick over the project’s direction, with Puck News noting delays in September and ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro’s openness to letting the filmmaker pitch the series elsewhere.
Kaepernick, who last played for the San Francisco 49ers in 2016, became a polarizing figure after kneeling during the national anthem to protest racial injustice, sparking a nationwide debate. His activism is widely believed to have led to his exclusion from the NFL.

“Six years the National Football League has stopped him from playing, [but] he still gets up at 4 or 4:30 every morning to train, five to six days a week,” Lee told Entertainment Tonight in 2022, emphasizing Kaepernick’s dedication. “It’s his story, not the false narratives.”
The docuseries was set to feature exclusive interviews and unseen footage from his archive, offering a “full, first-person account” of his career and activism. Despite the project’s cancellation, Kaepernick remains focused on returning to the NFL.
“I know I have to find my way back in,” he said previosuly on the I Am Athlete podcast. “I just need that opportunity to walk through the door… I’ll handle the rest from there.”
