*20th Century Studios has unveiled the trailer for “Ella McCay,” the upcoming original comedy from Oscar and Emmy Award®-winning filmmaker James L. Brooks. Known for classics like “As Good as It Gets” and “Broadcast News,” Brooks returns to the director’s chair with a story centered on family, work, and love. The film will open in theaters across the U.S. on December 12.
The ensemble cast includes Emma Mackey of “Barbie” fame in the title role, alongside Oscar® winner Jamie Lee Curtis (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”), Jack Lowden (“Slow Horses”), Kumail Nanjiani (“The Big Sick”), and Ayo Edebiri (“The Bear”). They are joined by Spike Fearn, Julie Kavner, Rebecca Hall, Becky Ann Baker, and Joey Brooks, with Albert Brooks and Woody Harrelson rounding out the cast.

In the new trailer, viewers meet Ella McCay, an optimistic young woman striving to balance her career ambitions with her family life. The film follows her through a series of heartfelt and humorous challenges in what Brooks describes as a story “about the people you love and how to survive them.”
Reflecting on his creative inspiration, Brooks said, “My goal for this movie was to pay tribute, as best I could, to the golden age of movie comedy, the 1940’s and 50’s, when each of the Hepburns reigned. (Very strangely, it ended up feeling timely.) The challenge all along was to maintain the same zany spirit of that era, while still taking seriously the inevitable jolts, pains and pitfalls of being human. I was lucky enough to have a dream cast who delivered this story about Ella and her family with an energy and spirit way past what I’d imagined.”
“Ella McCay” is produced by Brooks, Richard Sakai, Julie Ansell, and Jennifer Brooks, with executive producers Colby Pines, Seth William Meier, and Amy Brooks. The film also features an original score by acclaimed composer Hans Zimmer.
