*The chilling trailer for “The Conjuring: Last Rites,” the ninth and final film in the core Conjuring series, has arrived, offering a glimpse into the Warrens’ most harrowing case.
Directed by Michael Chaves, the film unpacks the eerie Smurl haunting, a real-life case that Chaves describes as “the darkest thing we’ve ever seen in the series.” Set for release on September 5, the movie promises a haunting conclusion to the beloved horror franchise.
Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga return as Ed and Lorraine Warren, the paranormal investigators at the heart of the series. Set in 1986, five years after “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It,” the story finds the Warrens retired and lecturing at universities. However, a Pennsylvania family’s reports of sinister supernatural activity pull them back into the fray.
“They’re both contemplating hanging it up,” producer Peter Safran noted, “Unfortunately, because of their innate goodness, they actually can’t walk away from it.”
The trailer highlights the personal stakes of this case, with Farmiga hinting at the demon’s motives: “This demon has a vendetta, and what it wants is very, very personal.” The story also explores the life of the Warrens’ daughter, Judy, played by Mia Tomlinson, whose upbringing amidst cursed artifacts takes center stage. The demon’s fixation adds a deeply personal layer to the horror.

Featuring a talented cast including Ben Hardy, Rebecca Calder, and Elliot Cowan, the film also includes cameos from real-life figures Judy Warren and Tony Spera. Written by Ian Goldberg, Richard Naing, and David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, and produced by James Wan and Peter Safran, “The Conjuring: Last Rites” wrapped filming in London in November 2024.
While this film marks the end of the Warrens’ journey, the Conjuring universe will continue with future projects and an upcoming HBO Max series. For now, fans can brace themselves for the darkest chapter yet when “The Conjuring: Last Rites” hits theaters worldwide next September.
