*Every night at The Hollywood Bowl is a delight but Black Movie Soundtrack Night is an extra special night for movie buffs fascinated by stories about the Black experience. For five years Reginald Hudlin has played out his vision of a supersonic soulful experience under the stars.
DJ D-Nice got the crowd going with a thumping bumping set that included songs from TV shows and movie soundtracks.
Comedian Craig Robinson hosted the evening, with opening remarks by Hudlin. Bassist Marcus Miller is also a visionary for the event, that featured Derrick Hodge as the evening’s conductor with his orchestra Color of Noize.

Original Dreamgirl Jennifer Holliday is a five-star addition to any line up and she delivered in grand style when she performed God Is Trying to Tell You Something from the Color Purple movie and the evening’s finale’ I’m Telling You I’m Not Going.
Morris Day and Jerome Benton and Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis (original members of The Time) got the crowd on their feet with Purple Rain movie classics Jungle Love and The Bird. PJ Morton, Jr. paid tribute to Prince and Purple Rain by singing the title track.

Black Cinema night is about more than the music and the people. Throughout the night montages of classic movie scenes and beloved movie stars graced the big screen, many of whom are no longer here. The movie and TV clips added an element of priceless nostalgia and sent the audience of 18,000 over the top.
Craig Robinson led the audience in an impromptu “hum along” when he stared the first phrase of the iconic theme from Sanford and Son. The audience took over the next phrase and completed the song phrase for phrase. This was part of the tribute to Quincy Jones, who wrote the Sanford and Son theme as well as the score for In The Heat of the Night, among many others.

Full Force made a surprise appearance and performed Ain’t My Type of Hype in honor of the 35th anniversary of House Party, written and directed by The Hudlin Brothers.
Other performers included Bun B, Miles Caton, Tyrone Huntley and guitarist Tom Morello. Black Movie Soundtrack Night is a good bet for a full house and a royal flush of Blackity Black entertainment with global appeal.
