*Amazon Prime Video has canceled “Clean Slate,” the last completed television project by the late TV icon Norman Lear, just weeks after its February 6 premiere.
The news was shared by stars Laverne Cox and George Wallace, along with co-creator Dan Ewen, in a heartfelt guest column for Deadline. Describing the show as a “labor of love” and the product of a seven-year journey, the trio lamented its sudden end, writing it “was gone in a puff of server exhaust.”
“Clean Slate” centered on Harry, a traditional car wash owner in Alabama, played by Wallace, who reconnects with his estranged child, now living as Desiree, a trans woman portrayed by Cox. The show tackles themes of identity, acceptance, and second chances, balancing its emotional depth with Lear’s classic approach to socially conscious comedy.
“Ultimately, this show is about love, this show is about family,” Cox previously explained in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “It’s about figuring out how to connect across generations and experiences.”
Lear, who passed away in December 2023 at 101, was known for shaping American television with shows like “All in the Family” (1971–1979), “Maude” (1972–1978), “Sanford and Son” (1972–1977), “The Jeffersons” (1975–1985), and “Good Times” (1974–1979). His legacy of blending humor with social commentary lived on in “Clean Slate,” which Cox described as “very much a tribute to the legacy of Norman Lear.”
Cox of Laverne Cox Productions, Wallace, and Dan Ewen served as creators and executive producers of the series, with Lear and Brent Miller executive producing.
“Clean Slate” was praised for its heart and purpose. Its abrupt cancellation has sparked disappointment within the LGBTQ+ community.
“Thank you to everyone who laughed and cried with us,” wrote Cox, Wallace, and Ewen in their Deadline column. “Thank you to everyone who told us our show was exactly what you needed to see and feel during this dark time. We will be conducting a folksy awards campaign, so keep your eyes peeled for our bake sale. “For Yo’ Momma’s Consideration” ads are being prepared.”
The trio added, “Conversations will continue about where and how Desiree and Harry’s journey might continue. We would love to further the echo of Norman’s voice. We will push to keep the story alive, for the sake of the kind of people portrayed in it, the kind of people being legislated out of existence, or erased from history books.”
