*This past Sunday (07-28-24), an unprovoked confrontation left an African American man (Alexander Donta Mitchell) hospitalized after a distressing encounter with LAPD officers in the Watts community of Los Angeles.
Mitchell, who was seated in a parked car, was approached and aggressively handled by the officers, who offered no justification for their actions. Witnesses report that after being forcefully removed from his vehicle and handcuffed, Mitchell was subjected to physical violence, including being punched while restrained. His injuries necessitated immediate medical attention and subsequent hospitalization.
In response to this egregious incident, the family of Alexander Mitchell has enlisted the legal expertise of Brad Gage Law to seek justice and hold those responsible accountable. A press conference is scheduled for Tuesday, July 30th at 9:00 am at LAPD Headquarters, located at 100 West First Street, Los Angeles, CA.
The press event will see participation from several leading civil rights organizations, including Project Islamic Hope, Los Angeles Metropolitan Churches, The National Action Network, and the Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable. Prominent community leaders such as Najee Ali, Director of Project Islamic Hope, and other invested parties will be present to address the media and public.
Najee Ali emphasized the coalition’s demand for interim LAPD Chief Dominic Cho to expedite the investigation and to publicly disclose the identity of the involved officer.
“Our coalition of civil rights leaders is calling for Chief Cho to have this investigation fast-tracked, and we insist on the release of the officer’s name. We need to ensure that there isn’t a pattern of abuse with other civilians. This officer doesn’t deserve to have a badge or a gun. He deserves to have handcuffs placed on his wrists and be put in a jail cell for assaulting a restrained man who posed no threat to him,” Ali stated in a press release sent to EURweb.
Residents and national observers alike are urged to attend or tune into the press conference to show solidarity and support for Alexander Donta Mitchell and his family, as well as to advocate for the rights and safety of marginalized communities across the country.
The Los Angeles Police Department says in a statement on X that the department is aware of an incident that “unfolded from a traffic stop on July 28, 2024, in the Southeast Area, involving use of force. The incident is under investigation, and the officer involved has been removed from field duties.”

The call for justice resonates strongly within the community, as the coalition seeks not only accountability for the assault on Mitchell but also systemic changes to prevent further unjustified acts of violence by law enforcement officers.
This united front will push for concrete actions and transparency from the LAPD to ensure the safety and rights of all residents in Los Angeles be upheld. Further, they will advocate for comprehensive police reform, aimed at addressing the wider issue of systemic racism within the force.
