*Veteran Texas congressman Al Green is headed to a runoff against fellow Democrat Sylvester Menefee in a contest that underscores both the reshaping of Texas politics and a mounting appetite within the Democratic Party for fresh faces in Congress, MS Now reports.
At 79, Green finds himself in unfamiliar territory, facing a serious challenge from the 38-year-old Menefee, who has positioned himself as a voice for a new direction in Washington. Few members of Congress have clashed with President Donald Trump as persistently as Green, who has pursued impeachment proceedings against him on six separate occasions.
“He has conducted himself in office such that persons are now threatening members of the judiciary, threatening members of the House of Representatives, threatening members of the Senate. Donald John Trump should never hold any office of public trust ever again,” Green said in a speech in December.
Green’s opposition to Trump has played out beyond the legislative chamber as well. He was removed from the House floor during Trump’s State of the Union after raising a handwritten sign bearing the words “Black people aren’t apes!” The demonstration was a pointed rebuke of racially offensive content featuring former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama that had circulated through official White House social media channels.
Complicating Green’s path forward is a sweeping redraw of Texas congressional boundaries pushed through by the state legislature with Republican gains in mind. Although a federal court ruled the new map was an unconstitutional racial gerrymander, the Supreme Court allowed it to remain in place for the 2026 elections.. The revised boundaries stand to benefit Republicans by flipping as many as five seats.
The changes hit Green’s district particularly hard, transforming it into far more Republican-leaning territory and severing him from much of his political stronghold. He opted to seek office in the redrawn 18th Congressional District, an area that absorbs a large portion of his former constituency. Having dominated past elections with margins that reached nearly 90% in 2018 and faced no opposition at all in 2024, Green now confronts a far more uncertain road ahead.
