*Travelers are voicing growing discontent with the limited space provided by airplane seats. Complaints shared online describe situations where passengers felt squeezed against windows or forced to share their area with others.
According to the New York Post, some passengers report feeling confined or anxious when fellow travelers encroach on their space in cramped cabin layouts. In response, social media users have urged travelers to raise concerns during boarding rather than waiting until mid-flight. Some argued that airlines often fail to enforce seating policies, leaving passengers to resolve conflicts themselves.
TikTok features numerous clips illustrating tight quarters and questioning airline accountability. A video showed a man wondering if his full-figured neighboring passenger required extra seating, eliciting varied feedback. “Instead of shaming them, you [should] keep your opinion to yourself,” one user wrote, while another countered, “How is he being mean? He paid for a seat and was crushed into two-thirds of it.”

Etiquette specialist Jacqueline Whitmore noted that reduced dimensions on modern aircraft affect all flyers. “The seats on airplanes seem to be getting smaller for everyone, which makes awareness essential,” Whitmore told Fox News Digital. “No one should be pressed, leaned on or crowded out of their seat.”
She further recommended, “When space becomes a problem and boundaries are crossed, the solution isn’t to suffer in silence.” Whitmore suggested handling concerns politely.
United Airlines and American Airlines require passengers to fit within the seats with the armrests down. If a passenger cannot meet this requirement, they may need to purchase an additional seat. Both airlines recommend planning for crowded flights.
