*Some careers entertain audiences. Others change the culture. This summer, the African American Film Critics Association (AAFCA) will recognize a group of television trailblazers whose work has done both. From comedy icon Tracy Morgan to powerhouse executive Kathryn Busby, the organization’s 8th Annual AAFCA TV Honors will spotlight the creators, executives, and storytellers helping shape the future of television.
AAFCA announced that Morgan, Busby, Celeste Hughey, Lamar Chase, and Felicia Pride will receive Special Achievement Awards during the ceremony on August 8 at City Club LA in Downtown Los Angeles. The annual event honors excellence across television and streaming while recognizing individuals whose contributions continue to expand representation, elevate storytelling and influence the entertainment industry.
Tracy Morgan to Receive Historic New Honor
The headline-grabbing addition to this year’s ceremony is the introduction of the inaugural Flip Wilson Award, named after the legendary comedian whose groundbreaking television success opened doors for generations of Black performers.
Wilson’s impact on television remains undeniable. “The Flip Wilson Show” became one of the most influential variety programs of its era, bringing Black talent and perspectives into millions of American homes at a time when such visibility was rare.
The new award recognizes artists whose comedic work extends beyond laughs to offer cultural insight, social commentary and authentic storytelling. Morgan becomes the first recipient, a fitting choice considering his decades-long influence on comedy and television.
From “Saturday Night Live” and “30 Rock” to stand-up stages around the world, Morgan has built a career defined by fearless humor and personal authenticity. Today, he stars in NBC’s “The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins,” a contemporary mockumentary-style comedy exploring family, fame and identity through a predominantly Black perspective.

Recognizing Television’s Power Players
Beyond Morgan’s historic honor, AAFCA’s 2026 class shines a spotlight on several influential figures working behind the scenes and in writers’ rooms across the industry.
STARZ President of Original Programming Kathryn Busby will receive the TV Vanguard Award for her leadership in developing creator-driven projects and championing underrepresented voices. Throughout her career, Busby has played a key role in helping diverse stories reach mainstream audiences.
Writer-producer Celeste Hughey will receive the Impact Award. Hughey has quickly emerged as one of television’s most exciting creative voices, earning acclaim for projects that combine sharp humor, emotional depth and social relevance. Her work on Peacock’s “The ‘Burbs” further solidified her reputation as a storyteller willing to challenge expectations.
Sony Pictures Television executive Lamar Chase will receive the Horizon Award, recognizing his growing influence in developing culturally resonant content and supporting emerging talent. Meanwhile, acclaimed writer-producer Felicia Pride will be honored with the Salute to Excellence Award for her commitment to portraying authentic Black experiences and creating opportunities for new generations of creatives.

Why This Year’s Honors Matter
At a time when television continues to evolve through streaming, shifting audiences and changing business models, AAFCA’s selections reflect an industry increasingly driven by diverse voices and perspectives.
More importantly, the organization continues to recognize individuals whose influence extends beyond ratings and awards-season headlines. The honorees represent a broad spectrum of leadership—from performers and creators to executives shaping what audiences see on screen.
The recognition also reinforces AAFCA’s longstanding mission of celebrating excellence throughout the African Diaspora while highlighting achievements that might otherwise be overlooked by traditional industry institutions.
More Than an Awards Show
The TV Honors are just one piece of AAFCA’s growing year-round programming efforts. This summer, the organization will also present AAFCA Black Music Spotlight, AAFCA Spotlights PRIDE, AAFCA Next Gen with SAG-AFTRA and AAFCA Highlights Below the Line through partnerships with organizations including the Grammy Museum, SAG-AFTRA and the American Cinematheque.
Those initiatives reflect AAFCA’s broader commitment to mentorship, education and cultivating the next generation of entertainment leaders.
Winners in 13 competitive categories will be announced July 1, with presenters and additional participants expected in the weeks ahead. But before those trophies are handed out, the 2026 honorees have already underscored a powerful truth: the future of television belongs to the storytellers, executives and performers willing to push culture forward while bringing audiences along for the ride.
