
*The African American Film Critics Association/AAFCA celebrated excellence behind the camera and beyond the screen Sunday (03-01-26), hosting its 2026 Special Achievement Awards Luncheon at the historic Los Angeles Athletic Club.
The annual invitation-only event honored a diverse group of industry leaders whose work has shaped storytelling, advocated for inclusion, and amplified voices often overlooked by mainstream Hollywood. AAFCA President and co-founder Gil Robertson presided over the ceremony, which brought together luminaries from film, television, and advocacy.
Nina Shaw Receives Legacy Award
Attorney Nina Shaw, a founding partner of Del Shaw Moonves Tanaka Finkelstein & Lezcano, received the Legacy Award for her decades of work representing leading voices across film, television, and live stage.
Shaw has built one of entertainment’s most distinguished careers through advocacy and an unwavering commitment to amplifying artists seeking a voice. Her clients have included some of the industry’s most prominent figures, and her influence extends beyond negotiations to shaping the cultural landscape itself.
The Legacy Award recognizes Shaw’s enduring impact on the industry and her dedication to justice and equity throughout her career.

Sony Pictures Classics Honored with Social Justice Award
Sony Pictures Classics received the Karen and Stanley Kramer Social Justice Award, named for the legendary director and his wife. Co-presidents Michael Barker and Tom Bernard accepted on behalf of the distribution company, which for more than three decades has championed bold, socially conscious storytelling.
The company has built a reputation for bringing acclaimed independent and international films to global audiences, prioritizing filmmaker-driven narratives that tackle complex cultural themes. The award recognizes Sony Pictures Classics’ commitment to films that illuminate social issues and inspire change.
Michelle Satter Receives Film Advocate Award
Michelle Satter, founding senior director of artist programs at the Sundance Institute, was honored with the Film Advocate Award. Through the Sundance Directors and Screenwriters Labs, Satter has mentored generations of filmmakers, providing creative support that shaped the careers of many of today’s most influential directors and writers.
Her work at Sundance has made her a cornerstone of independent film advocacy, championing artistic freedom and creative risk-taking long before those concepts became industry buzzwords. The award acknowledges her indelible mark on global independent cinema.


Lorrie Bartlett Earns Salute to Excellence
Talent agent Lorrie Bartlett received the Salute to Excellence Award for her trailblazing career representing acclaimed actors across major film and television projects. Bartlett was one of the first African American board members at a major Hollywood talent agency and has been a vocal advocate for diversity, equity and inclusion throughout her career.
Her leadership has amplified culturally impactful projects and advanced the visibility of artists across the industry, opening doors for talent who might otherwise have been overlooked.
Nikkole Denson-Randolph Receives Spotlight Award
Nikkole Denson-Randolph, senior vice president and chief content officer at AMC Theatres, was presented with the Spotlight Award. In her role, she oversees programming, acquisitions and content strategy across the exhibitor’s national network.
Known for her keen creative instincts and commitment to authentic storytelling, Denson-Randolph has helped shape critically acclaimed and commercially successful projects while elevating diverse voices and narratives that resonate with audiences nationwide.


A Gathering of Industry Leaders
The luncheon drew an impressive roster of attendees and presenters, including actress Jurnee Smollett, filmmaker Ava DuVernay, actor Isaiah Mustafa, producers Charmaine DeGraté and Schelle Purcell, former BET chairman Debra Lee, and Karen Kramer, widow of director Stanley Kramer.
AAFCA, established in 2003, is the premier body of Black film critics in the world. The organization actively reviews film and television with a particular emphasis on entertainment highlighting the Black experience in the United States and throughout the African Diaspora.
