*Caitlin Clark, the Indiana Fever’s standout rookie, has faced intense physical play in the WNBA, missing half her team’s games due to hard fouls. This aggressive targeting, which some argue is typical for rising stars, has sparked controversy, with the league’s ratings suffering in her absence.
Now, a former White House adviser is pushing for federal intervention to address what he calls unfair treatment. Sean McLean, who served under President Donald Trump, wrote in the Wall Street Journal that the WNBA has created a “hostile workplace” for Clark.
“The league has fostered a hostile workplace for Ms. Clark through excessive fouling, targeting, and hostile comments from other players and owners,” McLean stated, noting that no players have faced suspension for flagrant fouls against her.
He argues the pattern of aggression warrants scrutiny beyond typical rookie hazing. Drawing parallels to Supreme Court cases and a prior WNBA investigation into Dearica Hamby’s pregnancy discrimination claims, McLean insists Clark’s situation demands federal action.
“Ms. Clark’s targeting may reflect a culture of disparate treatment, and the evidence provides reasonable cause for a federal probe into potential civil Rights violations,” he wrote. He calls on Congress, the Labor Department, and the Justice Department to investigate.

Critics, however, dismiss McLean’s stance as overblown, arguing that Clark, like many young athletes, faces standard competitive challenges. Clark herself has not indicated a need for government involvement, and some suggest McLean’s advocacy risks further isolating her within the league.
“Instead of protecting its transformative star, the league’s leadership ignores the relentless targeting of Ms. Clark, treating its greatest asset as if she were a PR headache,” McLean wrote. “That approach could turn into a legal liability for the WNBA.”
McLean’s push has stirred debate, with detractors warning that such interventions could exacerbate tensions for Clark rather than resolve them. The WNBA has yet to comment on the allegations.
