*Trevor Noah’s opening monologue at the 2025 Grammy Awards didn’t land as smoothly as expected, with some jokes coming across as rushed and unclear.
Noah seemed to stumble through punchlines, making his anti-Trump humor—particularly jokes about undocumented immigrants and Shakira—difficult to interpret. According to The Huffington Post, one awkward moment came when musician Doechii visibly rolled her eyes at an immigration-related joke.
“We’re going to be honoring the best in music as voted on by the 13,000 members of the Recording Academy and 20 million illegal immigrants,” he cracked.
While some viewers criticized his delivery, others defended Noah, suggesting his joke was aimed at Trump’s false voter fraud claims. Another joke about Shakira relied heavily on stereotypes about South America.
“Three-time Grammy winner Shakira is in the house, everybody! The greatest thing out of Colombia that isn’t a Class-A felony,” Noah joked.

Noah also joked about Trump’s impending tariffs. “Yesterday, Beyoncé announced a new tour … I will say, though, Beyoncé, there’s tariffs, we can’t afford a new tour. Maple syrup is about to be $50,” he said.
Elsewhere in his set, more jokes fell flat, such as his Lady Gaga-inspired joke about the political climate.
“Lady Gaga in the house! She’s going to be performing tonight, and she just announced her new album, ‘Mayhem,’ dropping next month,” Noah said. “Which is really impressive, Lady Gaga. I don’t know how you knew the theme of 2025 when you named your album.”
