*HGTV’s smash hit “Ugliest House in America” is back with a brand-new sixth season, now airing Mondays at 9 and 9:30 p.m. ET/PT, and host Retta is once again front and center, armed with her signature wit and zero chill when it comes to horrendous design choices.
In Season 6, the actress, comedian, and self-professed home design enthusiast tours 15 new homes across the country, all nominated by their owners, for what might be the show’s most jaw-dropping season yet.
“There was one house where I felt like I was in a live production of The Flintstones,” Retta told us in an interview. “It was purposely built to look like an early-age home… and they had kids!”
Retta dives into these design disasters blind–literally. She refuses to learn anything about the homes in advance, preferring to react in real time. “I don’t know what I’m going to say,” she said. “I don’t hold back much. If I’m shocked, I’m shocked in the moment.”
From a concrete cave in the Midwest to a home with carpeted walls, a bathroom built into an old bank vault, and a house that looks like a UFO, this season’s contenders are extreme. One particularly baffling home even left Retta wondering: “How am I living without a flat wall for a TV?”
But beneath the laughs lies a deeper theme: hope for a renovation miracle. One of the 15 homes will be crowned “Ugliest House in America” and win a stunning $150,000 renovation by HGTV star Alison Victoria in a one-hour finale.
Retta says the show’s appeal is simple: “People are nosy. They like seeing what’s in other people’s homes, and it makes them feel better about their own space.” She added, “At least you don’t have a well in your kitchen or carpet up to your tub.”
As for the homeowners themselves? According to Retta, it’s a mix. “Some are proud of the crazy. Others are hoping to get picked so they can finally fix what they started, or what they regret.”
When it comes to the post-renovation transformations, even Retta is blown away. “I’m always shocked. I love the before and after. That’s why I keep coming back.”
So, what can fans, new and returning, expect this season?
“The transformation,” Retta said. “That’s why people love HGTV. Seeing a space go from disaster to beautiful, it never gets old.”
