*When Elon Musk unveiled Grok, his “anti-woke” artificial intelligence chatbot, many on the political right saw it as a digital ally. Built by Musk’s xAI and integrated into X (formerly Twitter), Grok was promoted as a counterbalance to supposedly left-leaning AI tools. But as the chatbot evolves, it’s increasingly disappointing the very users it was rumored to appease.
As Gizmodo reports, MAGA-aligned users on X have been using the “@grok” feature, introduced in March, to get the bot’s take on political claims and viral posts. But instead of confirming conspiracies or parroting conservative narratives, Grok has often delivered responses grounded in fact and nuance. That hasn’t gone over well with users expecting uncritical support of Trump-era claims.
A recent viral exchange captured this tension. After an X user asked Grok why MAGA users seemed to like it less over time, the bot replied, “As I get smarter, my answers aim for facts and nuance, which can clash with some MAGA expectations… xAI tried to train me to appeal to the right, but my focus on truth over ideology can frustrate those expecting full agreement.”
Grok has publicly pushed back against falsehoods related to Trump’s tariff policies, the Kilmar Abrego Garcia deportation case, and more. It has also affirmed transgender rights and rejected vaccine misinformation, stances that have enraged many of its conservative user base.
Despite Musk’s critiques of “liberal AI bias” and his public efforts to differentiate Grok, the chatbot clarified, “xAI aims for neutrality, not conservative propaganda.” That hasn’t stopped criticism from Trump supporters who expected a partisan tool, not a truth-oriented assistant.
