Tyler Perry Says Production on ‘Sister Act 3’ Is ‘Taking So Long’

*Tyler Perry is “a little annoyed” that Disney seems to be dragging to start production on “Sister Act 3” starring Whoopi Goldberg. 

“I’m a little annoyed with how long this has taken me. It’s taking so long — like, I’ve done four movies since we started talking about this,” Perry told Entertainment Tonight.

“When I’m outside producing with … you know, Disney’s a huge, wonderful company, but I really want to get this movie and Whoopi really wants to get this movie,” he continued.

Disney confirmed in 2022 that “Sister Act 3” is in the works, almost 30 years after the last movie.

The original “Sister Act” centers on a singer (Goldberg) who hides as a nun after witnessing a crime. The film premiered in 1992 and was a massive hit at the box office, grossing over $231 million against a $31 million budget. The sequel, “Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit,” was released the following year. 

According to Walt Disney Studios, the third title in the franchise is in development. Oscar-winner Goldberg is also producing the film with Perry. It was previously announced that “Insecure” co-EP Regina Hicks and then Star showrunner Karin Gist were working on the script, per Deadline.

Goldberg previously discussed the film during an appearance on “The Late Show with James Corden.” When the host asked why a third film hadn’t happened, the actress explained, “Because for a long time, they kept saying no one wanted to see it,” Goldberg said.

“And then, quite recently, it turns out, that that may not be true. People might want to see it. So, we’re working diligently to try to figure out how to get the gang together and come back,” she added. 

Last year, Goldberg called on Maggie Smith to reprise her role as Mother Superior in “Sister Act 3.” 

“I want to let Maggie Smith know that I’m holding the part of Mother Superior for you, because I just can’t do it with anybody but you,” Goldberg said on the British talk show Loose Women, People reports. 

“So, if you need me to come over here and shoot it and do whatever we have to do, we will do whatever you want us to do,” she added. “But we don’t want to do it without you, Maggie.”

“Sister Act 3” will debut on Disney+.
