*“Dune: Part 2,” directed by Denis Villeneuve, does the unimaginable. It defies the odds. Very, very few sequels are better than their predecessors. But this sequel surpasses the first.
Based on Frank Herbert’s bestselling novel, “Dune,” “Dune: Part 2” is the follow-up to 2021’s six-time Academy Award-winning “Dune.”
The film operates on all its powerful cylinders– great performances, breathtaking cinematography, and exciting action scenes.
Interestingly, “Dune 2” is released during Women’s History Month. Timothee Chalamet has no qualms about being cast against strong females. In “Wonka,” Noodle (Calah Lane) taught the iconic Willie Wonka (Chalamet) how to read, and later became his business partner.
Lane is a 2024 NAACP Image Awards nominee for “Outstanding Youth Performance in a Motion Picture” (“Wonka”). In “Dune 2,” Paul Atreides (Chalamet) tells Chani (Zendaya), “I would very much like to be equal to you.”
“Dune: Part Two” explores the mythic journey of Paul Atreides as he unites with Chani and the Fremen while on a path of revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family. Facing a choice between the love of his life and the fate of the known universe, he endeavors to prevent a terrible future only he can foresee. The epic adventure is also a love story. Paul tells Chani, “I will love you as long as I breathe.” The ending of “Dune 2” was so riveting, it left me salivating for a “Dune 3.”
The expanded cast, with returning and new stars, includes Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Dave Bautista, Christopher Walken, Souheila Yacoub, with Stellan Skarsgård, Javier Bardem, and the infamous Charlotte Rampling.
In 2015 the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite, began by April Reign, started to trend. Some took offense to it. Reign highlighted the fact that out of twenty actors nominated that year, none were people of color. Rampling said it was reverse racism and “racist to Whites.” Rampling later said her comments were misinterpreted.
