*Mariah Carey is set to be questioned by attorneys regarding statements in her memoir that her brother, Morgan, allegedly sold drugs.
Court documents reveal that the singer’s in-person deposition is scheduled for January 17, 2025, at her brother’s legal team’s New York office, The Sun reports. This deposition follows a lawsuit Morgan, 64, filed in March 2021, accusing his superstar sibling of defamation in her memoir, “The Meaning of Mariah Carey.”
In the book, Mariah, 55, describes her estranged relationship with her brother. She alleges that Morgan was violent towards her, sold drugs while working at a New York nightclub in the 1980s, and suggests he served prison time—all claims that Morgan has denied.
In one passage in the book, she wrote “I was a little girl with very few memories of a big brother who protected me.”
“More often, I felt I had to protect myself from him, and sometimes I would find myself protecting my mother from him too,” Mariah revealed.
In another passage she describes Morgan as her “sometimes drug-dealing, been-in-the-system, drunk a** brother.”
Morgan noted in his lawsuit that Mimi caused “serious damage” to his reputation and inflicted “emotional distress” on him with her book’s “false and defamatory, personally invasive and painful” claims.
In February 2022, a judge dismissed most of Morgan’s lawsuit but allowed two claims to proceed: Mariah’s allegations that he was a drug dealer and her implication that he had been in prison.
In a statement, Morgan’s lawyer Richard Altman The U.S. Sun: “It is disheartening that Mariah, in order to build herself up to the public in her ‘tell-all book,’ manufactured disparaging facts about her brother Morgan, who is still mourning the deaths of his sister and mother, deaths which he first learned of not from her, but from her lawyer to his. What is more disheartening is that Mariah, after significantly harming Morgan through her words, plays the victim. In the end, not only will Mariah have to answer questions under oath about how she intentionally harmed her brother, but the public will learn the real truth behind their relationship and who the real victim is.”
