*Margret Chola is living proof that style knows no age. And she is not about to slow down at all. With more than 220,000 followers on Instagram, Chola is a social media fixture in a major way.
So much so that the 80-something fashionista and her granddaughter, Diana Kaumba, took her unique visuals to the next level with the “Granny Series.” Launched in 2023, the Instagram photo showcase puts Chola front and center with vibrant and playful fashions, courtesy of striking photos.
No doubt, the “Granny Series” is a labor of love that Chola enjoys to the fullest.
“I feel different, I feel new and alive in these clothes, in a way that I’ve never felt before,” the chic senior, known as “Legendary Glamma” shared with the BBC. “I feel like I can conquer the world!”
“The Granny Series” is the latest in a string of photographs that highlight what longtime fans of Chola appreciate from her: stunning outfits, which feature elegant gowns, chic pants, and bold accessories.
Kaumba crafted the idea for the series, which came during a visit to see her beloved grandmother in Zambia. The occasion marked the second anniversary of the passing of Kaumba’s father, whose impeccable style served as the inspiration for her love of fashion. During her visit, Madame Noire noted, Kaumba noticed that Chola had not worked many of her carefully curated outfits. As a result, she asked her “Mbuya” if she would like to try them on. It didn’t take long before Chola eagerly agreed.
“I wasn’t doing anything at the time, so I just said: ‘OK. If that’s what you want to do let’s do it – why not?’” Margret, who does not know her age because she does not have a birth certificate, said. “You will miss me when I die and at least this way you will be remembering me.”
To kick off the “Granny Series,” the debut photo captures Chola in her granddaughter’s stunning silver jumpsuit as she poses for photos in her village near Zambia’s capital, Lusaka.
In April, the series generated widespread attention in April when Kaumba dressed her grandmother in a bold red Adidas dress, paired with a colorful jeweled crown, red sunglasses, chunky gold chains, and red stiletto heels paired with blue Adidas socks. Once social media got a hold of it, Chola’s Margret’s fashionable looks quickly spread across the globe, with widespread recognition and features in Glamour South Africa in October and Your Luxury Africa in August.
Taking it all in, Kaumba brought her feelings to Instagram on Aug. 7, saying,
“Our Mbuya is Officially a COVER GIRL!!! A Dream of a 10 yr old Dee in Zimbabwe when I first saw a Magazine I said to my little self Wow! I wanna be on a Cover to one day,” she penned. “32 years later that Dream has finally come true but even better!!! I Put MY ANCESTOR on a COVER!!! Now if that’s not LEGENDARY!! Tell me what is! God I thank you cheers to more wins to come.”
