*Actress KJ Smith, known for her role in BET‘s “Sistas,” is stepping up as a social media ambassador for PepsiCo‘s new “Taste of Tomorrow” initiative.
The program aims to increase diverse representation in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) fields by supporting Black students through scholarships, mentorships, and direct engagement, especially those attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). A proud graduate of Florida A&M University (FAMU), Smith brings her unique perspective on the significance of STEM education for Black communities and the empowering role of HBCUs.
Smith, whose Hollywood journey began after working in corporate America and studying journalism, sees this initiative as essential to showcasing the breadth of career options in the STEM field.
“Everyone wants to be in front of the camera or be a content creator, which is amazing. But I love that PepsiCo also emphasizes that you can be an engineer, a scientist, or even work in tech while embracing your passions,” she shared.
Through the “Taste of Tomorrow” program, PepsiCo will offer scholarships developed with the PepsiCo Foundation to students nationwide.
In addition to financial support, the initiative brings well-known figures like KJ to speak to HBCU students, giving them firsthand insights into different professional paths and inspiring them to think broadly about their future.
“Pepsi has always been active at career fairs recruiting Black students,” KJ noted. “I remember interviewing with them; they’ve always put their money where their mouth is. They’re doing it again here, which makes me proud to be involved.”
Reflecting on her FAMU days, Smith says the close-knit, nurturing environment of an HBCU was a game-changer.
“I didn’t get left behind. My professors knew my name and knew my story. They didn’t accept anything less than excellence, and that pushed me in a way I could never forget,” she recalled. Sharing her experiences with HBCU students, she says, is crucial to helping others see the lasting impact that determination and community support can have.
Smith’s involvement in Taste of Tomorrow is deeply personal. She remains committed to her HBCU roots and the importance of Black visibility in sectors like STEM. She encourages young people to explore fields they may not initially consider.
“STEM careers open doors to changing not just your life but the lives of those around you. We all want to succeed fast, but this program shows students that meaningful, lasting success often requires stepping off the beaten path.”
Beyond her role on “Sistas,” KJ Smith’s influence as a PepsiCo ambassador underscores her commitment to broader societal change.
“This is not just about a career; it’s about leaving a legacy and inspiring the next generation to understand that there’s a place for them in these industries. “Taste of Tomorrow” brings that awareness and the resources needed to get there.”
