*Season 2 of “Shrinking” on Apple TV+ drops tomorrow, October 16. Fans are eager to see what’s next for “Gabby,” played by Jessica Williams. The hit dramedy, starring Jason Segel, follows a grieving therapist who begins to tell his clients exactly what he thinks, regardless of ethical or professional consequences. As Gabby, Williams is one of Jimmy’s colleagues and friends.
Season 2 dives deeper into the lives of its beloved characters, with Gabby’s storyline becoming a central part of the show’s evolution. In an exclusive interview with EUR, Williams opened up about her excitement for the new season and the growth of her character.
Reflecting on Season 2, Williams shared what she looked forward to as Gabby’s world expands: “I was looking forward to exploring Gabby’s relationships with everybody else. The first season was about figuring out the show, the tone, and the characters. By Season 2, I knew what was great about Gabby and Liz together, and I knew the funny dynamics. So I just got to explore that and enjoy it more.”
Williams highlighted the importance of returning to work with her castmates, especially after the industry strike: “I was mostly excited about working with all the actors again. I like the show, and I like the friendship that we all have. We started filming right after the strike ended, so it was nice just to be together and make something.”
As fans can expect, the show further explores Gabby’s relationship with her friends and co-workers, allowing Williams to explore her character’s comedic and emotional aspects.
This season also sheds light on Gabby’s love life, and Williams was more than ready for the challenge. When asked about playing a character exploring love and intimacy, Williams said, “I think I’ve played characters that have been exploring their love life for quite a while. I’ll do a rom-com, honey—a thoughtful rom-com. To me, it’s not my job to judge it. It’s just my job to tell it and honor their experience.”
She added, “Everybody loves love, but it’s such a vulnerable thing. Everyone wants to feel known on some level, even if you’re an introvert. I love stories about love, even friendship romances. That’s all the juicy stuff. It’s all the messy stuff where there are no hard lines.”
For Williams, portraying love is about embracing the complexity and conflict that comes with it, making it a rewarding aspect of her role.
*Shrinking* is a show that explores unconventional therapy methods, and Gabby is no stranger to taking an alternative approach to helping her clients. Williams herself finds the theme of therapy fascinating, even revealing her favorite style: “I’m a CBT [Cognitive Behavioral Therapy] gal. I love a good conversation and a good dialogue. That’s my bread and butter.”
In her own life, Williams shared a personal insight about her therapy sessions: “I have this therapist who gives me homework, and I love it. She’s like, ‘Okay, why don’t you think about this this week?’ She sends me books and podcasts. I love an assignment—it feels good to me.”
This intersection between Williams’ personal experiences and her portrayal of Gabby adds another layer to the character, making her performances even more authentic and relatable.
Season 2 of “Shrinking” promises more humor, depth, and emotional growth for Gabby, Jimmy, and the rest of the ensemble cast. Alongside Williams, the series stars Jason Segel, Harrison Ford, Christa Miller, Michael Urie, and Luke Tennie. Fans can look forward to watching the characters continue to evolve, with Gabby stepping more into the spotlight and showcasing her journey in relationships and therapy.
