Jermaine Dupri Talks Hulu’s ‘Freaknik’ Documentary | WATCH

*Earlier this year Hulu announced a documentary about the wildest party in Black culture, known as Freaknik, and the internet went crazy. Many wondered if they would see themselves in the documentary and kids were anxious to see if their parents would be exposed. “Freaknik: The Wildest Party Never Told” produced by Jermaine Dupri tells a story that’s deeper than Freaknik’s infamous reputation.

This documentary provides a timeline of how what started as a Black college spring break party. Turned into the biggest party in Atlanta. Freaknik originally started in the 1980s when a group of students decided to throw a cookout for students who couldn’t afford to travel for spring break.

Again when the “Freaknik: The Wildest Party Never Told” documentary was announced all people were talking about was how wild it was. Would we see men and women who are now professionals and parents in their rawest form? But as you watch you learn this party was more about celebrating Black culture.

Freaknik can be considered the start of the Atlanta rap scene. During that time Outkast was a local group and used the Freaknik crowd to promote their music. Which helped them gain more popularity and led to them being the successful group we know today. The party also boosted the economy in Atlanta during that week. But all that glitters isn’t gold. After word began to spread about this party in Atlanta the crowd changed.

A place where women felt free to walk about in beach attire and let loose…became a place for men to take advantage of those women. Freaknik became very dark very fast. We spoke with Dupri about the importance of showing all sides of the journey of Freaknik.

“It was important to showcase all sides. Once you start having conversations with the five individuals that created Freaknik, and you start listening to them tell their stories. All these things just start unraveling. You have to tell the whole story if you’re going to tell it at all,” he said.

Just as it was important to discuss the origin of Freaknik. Discussing its downfall and how it became known as the wildest party in Atlanta was just as important.
