*Raise your hand if you’re surprised to learn that Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas recently made headlines by hiring a law clerk who’s faced allegations of sending racist text messages, as reported by The New York Times. As we thought. Nobody’s hand went up.
The clerk in question, Crystal Clanton, a graduate of the Antonin Scalia Law School at George Mason University and former national field director for Turning Point USA, is set to work with Justice Thomas during the 2024-2025 term.
Clanton came under scrutiny in a 2017 article by The New Yorker, which detailed allegations that she had sent racially charged text messages to fellow members of Turning Point USA. One of the messages reportedly stated, “I HATE BLACK PEOPLE. Like f**k them all…I hate blacks. End of story.”
Despite the accusations, Clanton has claimed she does not recall sending such messages.
However, these allegations did not go unnoticed. In 2022, a federal appeals court investigated an appellate judge who had hired Clanton, prompted by the reported texts. Ultimately, the investigation did not find sufficient evidence to support claims of racism against Clanton.
Notably, during the investigation, Clanton received support from the chief judge of Atlanta’s federal appeals court, who was the one to hire her, as well as Justice Clarence Thomas himself.
In defense of his decision to hire Clanton, Justice Thomas expressed his familiarity with her character and dismissed the allegations of bigotry against her. According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Thomas stated, “I know Crystal Clanton and I know bigotry. Bigotry is antithetical to her nature and character.”
The hiring of Clanton by Justice Thomas has sparked discussions and raised questions about the standards and considerations involved in such appointments, particularly in light of the allegations against her.
