*Donald Trump’s insinuation last Friday that Black people support him because of his numerous indictments was sharply criticized. ABC News President Kimberly Godwin described it as “as racist as they come” in an email to staff the following day, according to a report by Semafor on Tuesday.
Godwin, who is Black, expressed her incredulity, stating, “No matter one’s politics, the fact that a person running for President of the United States made these remarks period—but also to a public crowd—and with so many black people present—and that they stand with him—is mind-blowing. Shocking.”
Trump, facing indictment for 91 felonies in four jurisdictions, made similar claims at a South Carolina gala hosted by the Black Conservative Foundation, suggesting that his mugshot in a Georgia RICO case has bolstered his appeal to Black voters.
A network spokesperson informed Semafor that Godwin’s characterization of Trump’s comments was “part of a larger editorial conversation” about their coverage.
One ABC News story characterized the remarks as “widely criticized” and quoted Cedric Richmond, a co-chair of President Joe Biden’s re-election campaign, who labeled them “just plain racist.” Another described Trump’s comments as “racially charged.”
In a recent profile by The Wall Street Journal, Kimberly Godwin was highlighted, with supporters praising her “crazy workaholic” ethic and dedication to fostering a friendlier office culture.
The impact of Godwin’s private views on Trump on ABC News’ election coverage remains uncertain. Godwin, one of the highest-ranking Black leaders in the news business, is likely to remain at the helm through the election: Disney, ABC’s parent company, as EURweb recently reported, renewed her contract even though she was “demoted.”
