*On Power Book III: Raising Kanan, Uncle Marvin did not start as the character fans were expected to love. He was volatile, messy, irresponsible, dangerous and, in the early days, a father who had deeply fractured his relationship with Jukebox.
But by the fifth and final season of the hit STARZ crime drama, London Brown says the audience’s connection to Marvin Thomas is proof that the layers worked.
Speaking with EUR, Brown said the relationship between Marvin and Jukebox is the storyline he will carry with him most.
“I think the development between the relationship that he developed with his daughter over time,” Brown said, reflecting on Marvin’s growth. He noted that in Season 1, viewers “didn’t know what to make” of Marvin and struggled with how he treated Jukebox.

That father-daughter arc became one of the show’s most emotional pivots. Brown described Marvin as going from one extreme to the other, eventually becoming what he jokingly called “Super Dad.” By Season 5, Jukebox being vulnerable enough to tell Marvin she loves him hits differently because of everything they survived to get there.
“For her to be vulnerable enough to tell her dad that she loved him, that touched him in a way that was completely caught off guard,” Brown said. “He didn’t know what to do with that.”
Still, Marvin’s final-season journey is not just about healing. Brown said the character’s biggest test is internal. Marvin has always had loyalty to Raq, Juke and the family, but this season he is fighting himself.
“He’s feeling himself going off the edge,” Brown said. “He’s reaching for something to keep him grounded to who he is and his sanity.”
That struggle becomes sharper as Marvin carries grief and vengeance into the final season.
Brown said Marvin is focused on finding resolution for what happened to his brother.
“One thing I do know, I gotta go seek vengeance,” Brown said of Marvin’s mindset. “That’s his core focus over everything.”
As for why fans now embrace Uncle Marvin, Brown credits the work of building a full human being, not just a funny or violent character.
“My goal each season was to layer the character with as many layers, because more layers, the more human they become,” Brown said.
He said the audience’s love for Marvin shows they connected to something honest.
“They saw the layers, and they were able to appreciate them,” Brown said. “I gave them something to connect to, and that’s why I think they feel empathy for Marvin.”
