*A disturbing livestream involving celebrity blogger Perez Hilton has ignited two conversations online: concern about his mental condition and anger over how long graphic content remained visible on TikTok
Hilton, whose real name is Mario Lavandeira, was taken to a hospital Tuesday after viewers contacted authorities about a self-harm incident unfolding during a live broadcast from his Florida home. The video, which we will not share, shows Hilton in a distressed mental state, using a knife to cut himself while covered in blood. Deputies with the Miami-Dade County Sheriff’s Office found him alone when they arrived, according to PEOPLE.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue assisted with his transportation to a nearby hospital. Members of the sheriff’s office Crisis Response Unit and licensed mental health professionals also responded, offering resources to his family. Officials said the response centered on safely resolving a crisis rather than escalating it.
“In many incidents involving a person experiencing a mental health crisis or actively harming themselves, deputies prioritize de-escalation by creating time, distance, and opportunities for communication,” a sheriff’s office spokesperson said.

“Unless there is an immediate threat to others, slowing the situation and utilizing crisis intervention techniques can reduce the likelihood of a suicide-by-cop encounter and minimize the risk of injury to the individual, deputies, and the public,” the spokesperson added.
Questions about TikTok’s response grew after users said the livestream continued for more than 30 minutes. Clips from the broadcast later spread across X and other platforms, allowing the footage to reach an even larger audience.
Some viewers also claimed TikTok’s recommendation system made the livestream easy to locate while it was underway. That allegation raised particular concern about children and teenagers potentially encountering the graphic material.
The backlash intensified as creators compared the situation with their own experiences on the platform. Several users said TikTok had previously restricted, suspended or removed accounts over far less severe violations.
Those complaints have not established exactly when TikTok became aware of the broadcast or how quickly moderators acted. The clip was ultimately removed, and Hilton’s account has been banned. Still, the incident has fueled broader demands for stronger detection systems during live content.
Reaction on X ranged from sympathy to unsupported speculation. Some users suggested Hilton may have been experiencing a mental health emergency, while others attributed his behavior to drugs, demonic possession or a medical complication. None of those theories has been confirmed by Hilton, his representatives or medical professionals.
One commenter urged compassion rather than speculation. “I feel for him. He’s already worried about paying his medical bills now he has another one. I do hope he’s OK,” the person wrote.
Hilton’s hospitalization follows several serious health problems earlier this year. He was treated for severe sepsis in March and later disclosed that doctors found a deep vein thrombosis in his right leg.
He underwent a thrombectomy to remove the clot and spent weeks bedridden before sharing footage of himself standing again in April. Hilton also began speaking more openly about faith after those medical emergencies.
The latest incident now places renewed attention on the safeguards used during livestreams, especially when a broadcaster appears to be in immediate danger. It also highlights how quickly graphic footage can move beyond its original platform, even after the live broadcast ends.
