Weekend Watch: ‘House Party’ is a House of Horrors – So is ‘M3gan’ | WATCH

*“Plane” was the film I had hoped to begin “Weekend Watch” with but was told there were no New York press screenings. The Lionsgate film stars Gerard Butler (“300,” “Olympus Has Fallen,” “Angel Has Fallen,” “The Phantom of the Opera”). Yes, Butler can sing, too. He was the Phantom. “Plane” also stars Mike Colter (“Luke Cage,” “Evil”). “Evil” is one of the best, well-written TV series with an extraordinary cast. Can’t say much about “Plane” other than I know there are no “Snakes on a Plane,” or Halle Berry and crew fighting terrorists in an “Executive Decision” scenario.

House Party” is a house of horrors for more reasons than one. Just ask LeBron James. It is his house that was trashed and his championship ring was stolen. Kevin (Jacob Latimore) and Damon (Tosin Cole) are house cleaners and decide to throw a party in LeBron’s mansion while he’s out of town. I’m very surprised LeBron became a part of the production and Kid N’Play, who starred in their classic “House Party,” did a cameo.

“House Party” lacks in jokes but is abundant with foul language and abhorrent characters always grabbing at their private parts. Often wondered if those Black men were so fearful of White men, they had to constantly check to see if their manhood was still intact. A partygoer did get his head severed.

The line in the movie that probably got this travesty of a “House Party” greenlit was the one boasting that stolen items from a riot were responsible for house furnishings. This sort of irresponsible and dangerous writing plays right into racists’ beliefs that Blacks are criminals and lazy.

M3gan” was the first film I saw this year and fortunately it did not disappoint as expected. So often January is a sort of dumping ground for mediocre movies. It did, however, get off to a bad start, falling into the trite pit of unimaginative storytelling. It began with a doll that farts and defecates. Happily, the doll was destroyed in a car crash and a more intelligent doll was created, M3gan.

“M3gan,” an acronym for Model 3 Generative Android, is a marvel of artificial intelligence, a life-like doll programmed to be a child’s greatest companion and protector that deals with bullies efficiently. M3gan is designed by roboticist Gemma (Allison Williams). When Gemma suddenly becomes the caretaker of her orphaned 8-year-old niece, Cady (Violet McGraw), Gemma decides to pair M3gan with Cady—a decision that will have unimaginable consequences. No doubt HAL, from “2001: A Space Odyssey” could be M3gan’s dad.

Directed by Gerard Johnstone, “M3gan” also stars Violet McGraw, Ronny Chieng, Brian Jordan Alvarez, and Jen Van Epps.
