*Uber and Lyft drivers say being picky about riders can help them make more money.

According to Business Insider’s interview with three ride-share drivers, being more selective about who they serve can boost their earnings.

“I have seen a 50-mile trip that only $20 was offered,” Ken, a 36-year-old Uber and Lyft driver in Houston, told BI. “I wouldn’t be doing that.”

“Last year, he earned a combined $25,000 driving for Uber and Lyft from about 2,000 trips, according to screenshots of earnings documents viewed by BI,” the outlet writes.

Ken prioritizes trips that pay at least $0.80 to $1 a mile.

“When I get a ride to the airport, I count my blessings,” he said.

Bill, a part-time Uber driver in North Carolina, also uses a strategy that helps boost earnings. According to BI, he earned more than $28,000 for 1,500 Uber trips last year.

“I spend a lot of time saying no,” Bill previously told BI, noting that he tries to avoid accepting “one-way rides” to remote areas.

Fred, a 40-year-old Uber driver in Virginia, “made about $44,000 in about 3,000 trips, according to a screenshot of an earnings document viewed by BI,” writes Business Insider, noting that his strategy is accepting most rides to retain his Uber “diamond status.”

Meanwhile, Uber drivers could lose access to their accounts if they continually refuse or cancel trips based on the rider’s destination.

“A delivery person has the right to decline any delivery opportunity offered to them. However, accepting delivery requests without intending to complete a delivery and canceling an unusually high number of deliveries after acceptance is considered fraud,” per uber.com.

A driver could also lose driving privileges if “they refuse or cancel trips for riders because of their service animals, wheelchairs, or other assistive devices,” according to Uber.
