*SZA explains in a reflective new interview that she prefers to write “super embarrassing” songs.

“I guess it’s because I get bored as f### writing about anything that isn’t, like, super embarrassing,” the R&B songstress told Variety. “And I feel like those things that I don’t want to say or acknowledge about myself are (songwriting) material – if it interests me to the point where it’s worth the risk.”

SZA said her lyrics highlight “mad aspects to my life.”

“But people don’t really know that because all I sing about are the hidden aspects that I think are more interesting,” she said.

“Honestly, I could write about jet-skiing with my friends, but I don’t want to make a song about that, and I don’t want to hear a song about it either,” SZA added.

The hitmaker was recently honored at WSJ. Magazine’s 13th annual Innovator Awards, along with six other cultural groundbreakers, on November 1st. She told the publication the one piece of advice she would give her younger self.

“Don’t let anyone psych you out. Everybody’s making it up. I cared more about people at work being mad at me or not liking me, I would, like, tone it down when other people would be annoyed with me. And I only now realize that was crazy, they were trying to psych you out and you let them. It’s ridiculous,” SZA said.

She also explained how Justin Bieber ended up starring in her “Snooze” music video.

“Him and Hailey [Bieber] were randomly the first people to hit me on FaceTime after SOS dropped.” At the video’s shoot, “[Bieber] showed up and he was down as f— for the whole day, and didn’t trip about nothing,” SZA shared.

In her new Variety interview, SZA said she never has a topic in mind when writing songs.

“I just let the beat tell me what to do, and then I start babbling and making words, and it starts to form itself,” SZA told the publication.
