Season two of “Bel-Air” has just gotten started. It picks up where we left off in season one, with Will (Jabari Banks) trying to figure things out after losing trust in Uncle Phil and leaving the mansion. Season two dives more into Will’s basketball life and will see the introduction of a new character named “Doc,” which will cause him to question everything he learned during his time in the Banks household.
EURweb talked with cast members Olly Sholotan, Adrian Holmes, and Jimmy Akingbola about how the series will continue to explore Black men and their relationships in season two.
Akingbola, who portrays house manager Geoffrey, shared that the audience will get more insight into Geoffrey’s relationship with Phillip Banks in season two. He explained, “family doesn’t have to be blood. And that’s the whole DNA of this show; it explores that. And so, after this significant Fallout between Uncle Phil and Geoffrey, we will see if they can repair this damage. And what that looks like moving forward. How much has it changed them as men? Also, we will see how that incident and Will’s incident have affected Geoffrey and how that impacts his life. And within that, we will share a bit with the audience about Geoffrey’s history. We’ll see more how Geoffrey and how he moves. I’m excited about that family is so important to Geoffrey, and we’re going to learn a little bit more about his family.
The character of Carlton in the reimagined drama has lots of complexities and layers to him. Sholotan shared that his mother got “stressed out” in season one every time he came on the screen, wondering what they would have her baby do. For Sholotan, that’s part of the character’s magic. He explained, “whenever he’s on screen, you don’t know what will happen next. I’m excited to take the foundation we’ve laid in the first season with his issues surrounding identities, mental health, and his place in the communities he’s in and goes even deeper and further with that. Because he now has Will by his side, we saw at the beginning of season two that he and Will have found their similarities and have put aside their differences. But now they both sharpen each other. They both have lessons that they can learn from each other. It makes for a truly riveting and, at times, heartbreaking story.”
