*Nicki Minaj claims she was prescribed Percocet for her severe menstrual cramps but was not informed the drug “was a narcotic” and “addictive.”
The hip-hop star is speaking out about being mindful of her drug and alcohol usage. In Nicki’s new cover story for Vogue, she discusses her father’s drug addiction and how it influenced her choice not to abuse drugs.
“I feel like I will always consider myself to be just like my father,” she told the publication before recalling her past addiction to Percocet. She was allegedly prescribed the drug for severe menstrual cramping and was taking the pills when she wasn’t in pain.
“No one told me that this was a narcotic and this was addictive,” she shared. “Luckily, I was able to ground myself. But—once an addict, always an addict. I feel like if you’ve ever experienced addiction to anything, which I have, you always have to think twice and three times about the choices that you make.”
Minaj also noted that “some of our biggest celebrities” are susceptible to drug addiction, and many “fight silent battles, like Prince,” she said.
“These are some of the greatest of all time. And one day they decided, ‘You know what? I’d rather self-medicate and be in my own world,’” she said, adding, “Should you keep on doing interviews and pouring out your heart so people can laugh? No.”
Elsewhere in the Vogue feature, Minaj reacted to her industry reputation of being a “mean” girl.
“When I hear the word mean, I think about the core of who the person is…I always tell people that the difference between being mean and being a b*tch is that b*tch passes,” she explained.
