*A shooting at Jackson State University (JSU) during homecoming weekend took the life of 21-year-old Jaylen Burns.
Burns, who was shot and killed on campus, was a well-known leader in the JSU community and a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.
“You know, right now, I got mixed emotions,” his grieving father Jason Burns said, per WJTV Jackson. “You know, I got the call at 11:07 last night from the town of Jackson, and he told me that he had made the arrest. And first, you know, I was relieved. At first I was, but that kind of lasted kind of brief. You know, I know it’s not going to bring Jaylen back, you know, and it’s upsetting, you know, that we lost a son and another family lost a son and also a brother.”
The 21-year-old senior’s mother, La’Trice Wright, explained to WGN9 that her son had been “on the Dean’s List for the past three years” and was “doing great things.”
Burns’ family members paid him a visit in the hours before he was shot.

“I was on my way back to Chicago, and I got a phone call while I was at the airport that my son had been shot. And so I had to turn around and come back,” his mother shared.
“To whoever took my son, they didn’t just take him from me. They took him from the world,” she added.
Jones College student, 19-year-old Joshua Brown, was arrested in connection to Jaylen’s death.
Brown is accused of killing Burns at the University Pointe Apartment Complex on JSU’s campus on October 15.

WAPT reported that the college senior “had been shot multiple times,” said Jackson Police Chief Joesph Wade.
According to the victim’s father, Burns was trying to stop a fight when he was shot. MadameNoire reports that Burns was taken to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries.
