The race is on among car manufacturers to create the best electric vehicles, while simultaneously getting the whole country to pay attention to our changing environment.
I don’t mean to sound preachy, but electric vehicles might be the answer to the ridiculous gas prices and icky smog more of the country is experiencing.
Genesis has an electric fleet of three vehicles, including a sedan, an SUV, and what I got to drive … a hatchback. Hyundai’s luxury brand delivers all the great features fans love and steps it up a few notches with high-end touches and tech. Let’s get into it.
Fun … like a spaceship: Remember watching futuristic movies and thinking, “I won’t be around when that happens.” Honey, we are around and we are in the future, and it’s fun. The GV60 felt like driving what I imagine piloting a spaceship would be like. From the way the rotary gear shifter appeared when the car turned on, to the totally digital dash and infotainment center, which could be accessed via touch screen or with a handy navigation knob (not so sure that is the official name for it), this car is definitely feeling like “Back to the Future.” The design flaw I experienced, however, was that the knobs were quite close to one another and I sometimes would lay my hand on the gear shifter when I was actually reaching for the navigation knob. Both are cylindrical and maneuver left and right. The distinguishing difference with the gear shifter is that it is designed with fingerprint slots. I often found myself thinking critically before shifting the knob, ensuring I wasn’t going to shift the vehicle to neutral when I wanted to simply change the music.
Power up and go far: I was super stoked to have a week with this vehicle. If you read my review of the Ioniq 6, I was also excited but only had a few hours with that baby. Over a week, I had the chance to get cozy and pretty familiar with the GV60, getting to know how it rides, how long it can last (on a charge), and the cost to keep it juiced up. Instead of charging the vehicle at home base, I took it to a local electric charger station, just like I would a gas car. This helped me understand the cost of ‘fueling it up.’ I spent about $40 over the full week with some moderate driving. I took it on the road for a 140-mile ride on a full charge – using the AC, going uphill, sitting in an hour or two of traffic, driving at various speeds and in different modes – and ended up returning with a bit under 30%.
Picking up speed was never an issue for this highly agile vehicle. Electric cars feel like they’ve got an advantage on the road because they don’t have to gain momentum like gas vehicles do.
So when you punch it, be prepared to go fast and far.
It’s the look for me: Off rip, as the kids say, I absolutely adored its exterior design. It definitely looks futuristic, but not in a cheesy way. It’s got presence and curb appeal. I don’t think I saw a vehicle quite like it on the road. Plus the paint job, on the model I tested was called Matterhorn White, which was perfect. It looked almost iridescent. The 21-inch alloy wheels definitely gave the look a pop, along with the rear spoiler and broad windows. The car looks like a concept vehicle in so many ways. The interior was also pretty fresh (channeling my 90’s lingo).
I loved the fluorescent yellow-green trim on the seats against the dark gray seats. The interior feels sporty, youthful, and super modern. The round interior door handle along with the other rounded personalization tools are a nod to steampunk, giving the inside a futuristic industrial flare. I also really loved the exterior door handles, as they get tucked away upon locking the vehicle, keeping with the sleek, clean look on the outside.
One thing I was sort of disappointed in was the power of the sound system. I turned that thing all the way up and didn’t get the booming experience I hoped for. Otherwise, the GV60 is all that. It’s got a great look, feel, and design. And is loads of fun to drive.
