Are Parents Responsible When The Child Dates Outside Their Race?
Tamera Mowry-Housley: My dad is white, my mom is black, so it would be hypocritical if they were to look at us and say, “You should only date this, or you should only date that…”
Adrienne Houghton: Yes!

Tamera: They taught us, they encouraged us – I’m just saying – they encouraged us – that love… yes.
Adrienne: You’re an example of that.
Loni Love: No, I’m just gonna – I’m just gonna – ‘cause we keep dancing around this.
Tamera: What?
Loni: There are some cultures that say you stay within your culture.
Adrienne: Yeah, 100%! That’s correct!

Tamera: I mean that, because we were taught… differently. I can’t.
Loni: You were taught differently.
Adrienne: Yeah. I totally was not raised like that, that’s why I’m literally sitting here going, I have such a weird, like, I never was told, “Date only this type of person, date only that type of person.” My sister dated a Filipino guy, I’ve dated white, Middle-Eastern, black white…
Jeannie Mai: Yes, but Mike Tyson isn’t talking about who he told his kids to date. He’s saying his actions and his life as a black man encouraged –
Amanda Seales: – Made them go away from black men.
Jeannie: That’s what we need to talk about. Do you guys agree with that.
Amanda: But we just –
Jeannie: Not what he told his kids to date.
Amanda: I think it depends on the person. Like, my father is a black man and he is… wack as hell, but… I have only dated brothers.
Jeannie: Ok! Ok.

Amanda: I have only loved brothers.
Adrienne: Ok, that’s a great example!
Amanda: I will continue to love brothers, contrary to what the blogs say.
Loni: So that has nothing to do with it. That has nothing to do with it.
Jeannie: So how did you manage to not place a stigma on black men based on your actual personal experience?
Amanda: I think my mom raised me to love black men.

Jeannie: There you go.
Amanda: You know? So… my father is an individual, but I have great brothers in my life as friends, you know, I have great exes, and we have great examples. I mean – So I think it’s interesting that he’s kind of internalizing it in this way because I think it really ends up being a much bigger presentation of just that like, you were one person, and I think, this is his own guilt kind of just showing up, you know…
Loni: Exactly.
Amanda: And just feeling like, “Dang, maybe I didn’t give them the best representation.”
