*According to health professionals, using too much ketchup can be dangerous to your health.

The popular condiment contains harmful chemicals that can negatively affect your health, as many brands don’t use fresh tomatoes — opting instead to combine sugar with a tomato concentrate.

Heinz, for example, reportedly uses dried versions of red tomatoes which requires water to be added during the process.

After the tomato concentrate, the manufacturer will then add distilled vinegar, two kinds of sugar in the form of high fructose corn syrup, and the regular corn syrup. They also add salt which increases the possibility of high blood pressure, spices, onion powder, and also natural flavoring. Heinz ketchup and other leading brands use “double” of the sugar to make it more addictive and appealing especially to younger children.

A 1. 3-liter bottle of Heinz ketchup, for example, contains 33 tablespoons of sugar. An average serving of ketchup has two teaspoons of sugar, the report states.

Meanwhile, the “natural flavorings and spices” remains a mystery.

Health officials also warn against using ketchup at restaurants, as most practice the unsanitary process of combining ketchup instead of trashing any leftovers and cleaning the bottles. Instead, they refill them and combine all leftover ketchup in a single bottle and serve it the next day.

The moral of the story is… ketchup contains a lot of calories, sugar and salt, so read the labels on bottles to know exactly what you’re putting in your body, and whenever possible, avoid using ketchup at restaurants.
