THE REAL Welcomes Growing Up Hip-Hop: New York’s Ja Rule and Brittney Atkins

*On Friday, November 1, it’s Fri-Yay and The Real welcomes back guest host recording artist, actress, comedian and author, Amanda Seales!

The ladies discuss how women have been encouraged for years to “lean in” at work to advance their careers and if it’s time that men start to “lean out”. Then, at what age is it appropriate to be taught about consent regarding the opposite sex? The hosts compare notes on their experiences regarding the topic.

Also, the ladies speak about the importance of teaching diversity at any age and in any region. And, did you know that co-host Loni Love has someone who breaks in her wigs for her? She tells us all about it!

Later, rapper, singer, songwriter, actor and businessman Ja Rule stops by to chat about his upcoming album and why he’s so passionate about owning an all-women’s professional football team and the female athletes getting equal pay. Then, his daughter Brittney Atkins joins in the conversation to talk about their reality series Growing Up Hip-Hop: New York and the advice her father has given her about fame.

Why Ja Rule is Passionate About Owning an All-Women’s Professional Football Team and Equal Pay

Ja Rule: Shout out to the amazing women that own the WFLA. So, a women’s-owned league. Women football by women, which is amazing. So Lupe and the crew, they – ah, ah- I went to them to talk to them about doing, like, kinda like what Jay-Z got going on with the NFL- doing all the entertainment- for the WFLA.

Loni Love: Right.

Ja Rule: So, I went and had that meeting with them, and that went well. And then I said, “Well, what’s this all about?”, you know. This is dope. This is women’s football, women’s empowerment. I’m interested, I’m digging it. And… I bought a team. I bought the New York Stars.

(The Real audience applauds)

Loni: What’s your team called?

Ja Rule: New York Stars. I got the New York Stars.

Loni: That’s cute. Very cute!

Ja Rule: And you gotta see these women play. They’re amazing athletes. It’s very comparable to what you see on the NFL field.

Jeannie: Yes! Well, in recent months the “women’s equal pay in sports” is a huge topic. Especially since the women’s USA Soccer team won the World’s Cup, which is so dope!

(The Real audience applauds)

Ja Rule: Congrats to them!

Jeannie: And you decided to take that on. Tell us about that.

Ja Rule: Yeah. Well, you know, I really see it odd that the women play just as hard, train just as hard…

Jeannie: That’s right!

Ja Rule: … but don’t get the money. But, now…

Amanda Seales: It is odd.

Ja Rule: But, now, don’t get me wrong, I do understand it. It’s about, you know, putting the butts in the seats, and, and, and who’s generating…

Adrienne Houghton: Who’s coming to see it.

Ja Rule: Who’s coming to see it. So, the, the, the actual play that’s on the field or on the court has to be amazing where people come out and see it. Women’s soccer doesn’t have that problem. Uh, uh, women’s tennis doesn’t have that problem. You know, I don’t think women’s football will have that problem. Because the product that’s on the field is comparable. It’s the same game.

(The Real audience applauds)

Amanda: Okay.

Adrienne: It’s also important that people know that it exists. ‘Cause there’s a lot of people that don’t know that’s something you can go see.
