Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, Makes History As First Ever Guest Editor of British Vogue

*British Vogue tapped Meghan, Duchess of Sussex to be the first person to guest-edit the publication’s prestigious September issue – and now we have a look the final result. 

The issue is considered the most notable of the year as it sets the tone for fall and winter fashion trends. Mad About Meghan reports that the former actress used the opportunity to highlight a group of inspirational women who devote their lives to effecting positive change.

The Telegraph noted: “The Duchess has been heavily involved in every decision, her involvement reflected on “every single page,” insiders revealed.”

We are proud to announce that Her Royal Highness, The Duchess of Sussex is the Guest Editor for the September issue of @BritishVogue. For the past seven months, The Duchess has curated the content with British Vogue’s Editor-in-Chief Edward Enninful to create an issue that highlights the power of the collective. They have named the issue: “Forces for Change” For the cover, The Duchess chose a diverse selection of women from all walks of life, each driving impact and raising the bar for equality, kindness, justice and open mindedness. The sixteenth space on the cover, a mirror, was included so that when you hold the issue in your hands, you see yourself as part of this collective. Equally, you’ll find grassroots organisations and incredible trailblazers working tirelessly behind the scenes to change the world  for the better. “Guest Editing the September issue of British Vogue has been rewarding, educational and inspiring. Ahead of the release of the September issue, Meghan said:

“These last seven months have been a rewarding process, curating and collaborating with Edward Enninful, British Vogue’s Editor-in-Chief, to take the year’s most read fashion issue and steer its focus to the values, causes and people making impact in the world today.

“Through this lens I hope you’ll feel the strength of the collective in the diverse selection of women chosen for the cover as well as the team of support I called upon within the issue to help bring this to light. I hope readers feel as inspired as I do, by the ‘Forces for Change’ they’ll find within these pages.”

According to Mad About Meghan the cover features: Adwoa Aboah, mental health campaigner and model; Adut Akech, model and former refugee; Ramla Ali, boxer; Jacinda Ardern, Prime Minister of New Zealand; Sinead Burke, diversity advocate and lecturer; Gemma Chan, campaigner and actor; Laverne Cox, LGBTQIA+ advocate and actor; Jane Fonda, campaigner and actor; Salma Hayek Pinault, women’s rights advocate, actor and producer; Francesca Hayward, Royal Ballet principal dancer; Jameela Jamil, body positivity advocate and actor; Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, author; Yara Shahidi, founder of Eighteen x 18 and actor; Greta Thunberg, climate change campaigner and student; Christy Turlington Burns, founder of Every Mother Counts and model. You’ll notice there’s a blank sixteenth spot, a mirror. The Palace said Meghan wanted to “include the reader and encourage them to use their own platforms to effect change.

A highlight of the issue is a candid conversation between Meghan and Michelle Obama that took place last December during the London stop of Michelle Obama’s book tour.

British Vogue’s editor-in-chief Edward Enninful shared the following on working with Meghan and curating Forces for Change:

“As you will see from her selections throughout this magazine, she is also willing to wade into more complex and nuanced areas, whether they concern female empowerment, mental health, race or privilege. From the very beginning, we talked about the cover – whether she would be on it or not. In the end, she felt that it would be in some ways a “boastful” thing to do for this particular project. She wanted, instead, to focus on the women she admires.”
