No, U Can’t Touch My Hair! Things White People Should Never Say to Their Black Coworkers

YouTube video

*Aren’t we all living in some tempestuous times when it comes to social problems? Tempers of many people are seen flaring over issues that are related to gender, politics and our topic for today – race.

These issues are naturally not appropriate for discussion in the workplace, but there are some inevitable circumstances where they need to be addressed. This is especially in the case of work environments where both the White and Black community work together. In such places, it is probably a good idea for people to tread lightly when it comes to racial issues or any issue that can spark negative emotions.

If you are white and are reading this article, then we would like to share some phrases that should be definitely avoided in the workplace. If, however, you are Black, then we would like you to share this knowledge with your white friends so as to avoid tempers flaring in the workplace – or anywhere else for that matter. So let’s get right to it – here are things White people should definitely not say to their Black colleagues.

  1. You mean you don’t wash your hair every day?
  2. I’m always scared of getting pulled over too!
  3. I spent my entire weekend at the beach, and now look! I’m almost as dark as you!
  4. Y’all…
  5. I love NWA
  6. You go, girl!
  7. All lives matter; not just black people’s
  8. Oh my God, I’m going to take a trip to Africa!
  9. We all get discriminated against
  10. You should try and see the good side in Trump
  11. Yo, Wattup?
  12. Are you really black? (Are both your parents black?)
  13. YOU should definitely join the company’s baseball/basketball team!
  14. You’re the most beautiful black girl I’ve ever seen
  15. It’s wrong for NFL players to take a knee
  16. The same thing happened to my co-worker who was also black!
  17. …girlfriend. (especially with an accent)
  18. You’re different in a good way
  19. You remind me of that girl on television (or any black celebrity)
  20. AND DEFINITELY REFRAIN FROM saying the ‘n’ word!

Well, there you have it folks. Your Black co-workers will definitely appreciate your effort, and will get along with you more naturally than ever. Even if you say something wrong and never intended for it to come out that way – don’t just let it hang there. It’s always better to say sorry.
