It’s Janet Jackson Week! Bday (May 16), 25th Anniversary of Janet. (May 18), Billboard Icon Award (May 20)

*New York, NY- This week is all about global superstar Janet Jackson as she looks forward to mix of personal celebrations and career milestones including a special Mother’s Day post and surprise for fans (5/13), her birthday (5/16) and the 25th Anniversary of her ground breaking ‘janet.’ album (5/18). She is also set to receive Billboard’s ICON Award and perform on television for the first time in nine years during the “2018 Billboard Music Awards” (5/20).

On Sunday, Mother’s Day, she shared a touching tribute to her own mom, Katherine Jackson, on Instagram with a photo of herself as a child snuggling against her and included the caption, “Everything you’ve taught me, I’ve never forgotten, and I now find myself sharing those same beautiful experiences with my baby. I LOVE U !!” It was also announced she partnered with Essence to surprise four deserving single moms with tickets to the Essence Festival to see her perform live as well as receive a professional makeover.

This coming Wednesday, May 16, she’ll celebrate her 52nd birthday.

Friday, May 18, marks the 25th Anniversary of her multi-platinum album ‘janet.’ She co-wrote and co-produced the songs on the album along with super producers Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. The album featured her sensual side, was her first to debut at #1 and produced six top 10 hits including:

  • “Again”- hit #1 on the charts and received both a Golden Globes or Academy Awards nominations for “Best Original Song.”
  • “That’s the Way Love Goes” -another #1 single that received the Grammy Award for Best R&B song as well as a Billboard Award for Top R&B Single; Airplay.
  • “Any Time, Any Place” -peaked at #2 and was sampled by Kendrick Lamar on his 2012 song “Poetic Justice.”
  • If” – reaching the fourth spot on charts, the video remains a fan favorite for its visuals and iconic choreography by Janet and Tina Landon. The video won a Billboard Award for “Best Dance Clip,” among other accolades.
  • “You Want This”– reached No. 8 and utilized samples from Diana Ross & The Supremes (“Love Child”) and Kool & The Gang (“Jungle Boogie”).

“Because of Love”- peaked at #10 and the accompanying video offered a rare, behind-the-scenes look at life on the road with Janet and some of her well-known dancers.

Finally, on May 20, Billboard will honor her with the prestigious ICON award and she will also perform for the first time in nine years. The show will broadcast live from MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT on NBC. Leading up to the show, fans can listen to Janet’s top Billboard hits over the years on the official 2018 Billboard Music Award’s ICON Spotify playlist.
