EURweb on the Scene: An Evening with ‘Dear White People’ (WATCH!)

Dear White People” just premiered its first episode of the second season and is back better than ever after surviving the outrage from online trolls from the prior season. If you are just catching on, the series is about a group of black students at a fictional Ivy League college tackling hard hitting issues in the community.

The Paley Center for Media in Los Angeles held a special screening and conversation with the cast favorites and Justin Simien (Creator/Writer/Executive Producer/Showrunner). EURweb associate, Miss Conversation Piece got the scoop on the red carpet to find out what Antoinette Robertson, Ashley Blaine Featherson, Marque Richardson, and DeRon Horton all think of the new season, the relatability of the characters to their own life, what we can expect to see, and why audiences need to tune in.

Dear White People doesn’t shy away from complicated topics, and it helps start a dialogue for subjects like women’s health issues, depression, and more. Antoinette Robinson says,” Its well written, it’s well-acted these characters are carefully crafted to depict the black experience in a very nuanced way.”

EUR associate Miss Conversation Piece chats with ‘Dear White People’ star Logan Browning at the Paley Center for Media event for the Netflix show.

Logan Browning touched on the black sisterhood aspect and that we now have an opportunity to share that culture from a different perspective. Justin Simien spoke on the backlash he received in the beginning of the shows first season and how he won audiences over.

“I don’t know that the backlash that we got from the first season was ever from potential audience members to begin with so I’m glad that they are busy complaining about other things so we can get on to the business of watching the show. If you want to take dear white people the title literally, it’s at most an invitation to a table to have a conversation that so many of us need to have and really don’t know how to,” Simeon says.

Tune in to the new season on Netflix and sound off in the comments what you think of the season 2 premiere episode.
